Musings On The Colour Blue

Blue is a multidimensional colour which takes shape in nature through pale blue skies during the day, to the alluring sapphire colours of the ocean, then transforming itself into a much deeper blue as the moon rises. Blue commonly symbolises peace and serenity, bringing with it a sense of stability and reliability. Taking a closer look at the blueprint of this colour, it is evident that there is a variety of shades that have distinguishable characteristics that are suitable for different occasions. These shades on the colour spectrum range from pale sky blues, royal cobalt and sapphire to rich navy. In fashion blue is a timeless colour that exceeds trends and has a long lifespan in everyone's wardrobes.

Colour theory suggests that the colour blue brings a sense of tranquillity and calmness. Blue is decorated across pop culture as well as in Hollywood. As seen in the a rendition of Cinderella (2015) starring Lily James; in a breath taking sky blue off the shoulder ball gown. Characters such as Cinderella and Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz (1939) portray a sense of innocence and optimism, both wearing pale blue dresses as a symbol of their calming yet defiant nature. Contrasting this, Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface (1983) wore a jaw dropping sapphire floor sweeping gown. This shade of blue personified her mysterious and admirable appearance. Blue is highly versatile as it can be dressed down or glammed up. It will always give off a polished and timeless look, no matter the formality of the occasion.

Navy Nights

Can you wear navy and black together? Although not a fashion crime we suggest accessorising navy dresses with alternative colour palettes which compliment the navy shade, instead of working against it. Navy is versatile so you can wear many different accessories. The shoes that go best with navy dresses are heels in nude colours. However, to add that extra glamour, you could wear metallic shades such as silver. For an extra pop, wear darker blue shade earrings or something opposite on the colour wheel, like orange, pink or yellow, which will make a statement.

Graceful in Sky Blue

We have seen a lot of come back trends from the early 2000s, and there is a want to revive the pastel colours but put a modern spin on them. If blue hues hold a special place in your heart and your closet, it's the perfect time to wear them in playful new ensembles. Lighter colours tend to draw the eye, so use this as an opportunity to highlight your favourite features - a hand beaded blue gown will make any moment unforgettable. A midi length embroidered dress will be the best choice if you like intricate fabrics and have a taste for chic glamour.

Bold in Cobalt

Cobalt is not only incredibly flattering but also a versatile and timeless colour that works well in every event. You will turn heads dressed head to toe in a silky cobalt halter gown, and all for the right reason. An off the shoulder dress with a classic straight cut gives the image of freshness and elegance also. Match those with lighter neutrals, like tan or white, for summer daytime wear, and transition to evening by mixing in darker greys or black for your accessories.
